PSLE: Understanding the AL Score and Scoring System

The Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) is a milestone in every Singaporean student's academic journey. What is the AL Scoring System?

The Achievement Levels (AL) system replaces the previous T-score system with a more straightforward, banded scoring method. Under this new model, each subject a student takes will be graded using 8 Achievement Levels — AL1 to AL8, with AL1 being the best score and AL8 the weakest.

Students will receive an AL score for each of the four subjects — English, Mother Tongue, Mathematics, and Science. These scores are then added together to form the PSLE Score, ranging from 4 (best possible score) to 32.

How Does the PSLE Scoring System Work?

Let us say a student scores the following:

English: 88 → AL2

Mother Tongue: 91 → AL1

Mathematics: 84 → AL3

Science: 77 → AL4

Their total PSLE score would be:

AL2 + AL1 + AL3 + AL4 = 10

This total score is then used to determine the student's eligibility and placement in secondary schools. Generally, the lower the PSLE Score, the better the performance and the wider the choice of secondary schools.

Why Was the PSLE Scoring System Changed?

The Ministry of Education (MOE) introduced the AL system to shift away from fine differentiation between students, often leading to undue pressure and competition. Unlike the old T-score system, which ranked students against one another, the AL scoring system assesses students based on individual achievement.

This new system encourages a growth mindset, recognising that learning is not just topping the cohort but mastering the subject matter. It promotes holistic education and allows students to develop beyond academics.

Secondary School Placement and PSLE Score

The Secondary 1 (S1) Posting Process uses the PSLE Score as the primary criterion. If students have the same PSLE Score when applying to the same school, tie-breakers are applied in the following order:

• Citizenship
• Order of school choices
• Computerised balloting

This makes it even more critical for parents and students to consider their school choices carefully during the selection process.
